Soon to be joining the telegraph, rotary phone, and possibly the land-line as historic relics of our communication past is the traditional cellular phone. The mobile phone market is beginning to prefer smartphones with their web and application abilities. Although only 15% of the mobile phones shipped by venders in 2009 were smartphones, their numbers are on the rise. 174 million total smartphones were shipped in 2009, an increase of 15% from 2008’s number of 151 million.
According to a recent study done by the Princeton Survey Research Associates for the Pew Research Center’s Internet and American Life Project, 18-29 year olds are the most active users of smartphones. Among this group, 52% have used their phone to send emails and 20% have purchase items with their phone. A total of 32% of all adults have accessed the internet with a handheld device.
