Cecil Beaton: The New York Years

Now through February 20, the Museum of the City of New York is featuring an exhibit celebrating the work of British born photographer and designer, Cecil Beaton.  Beaton was embraced by Manhattan social and artistic circles, and his energy and curiosity led him to pursue interests in fashion and portrait photography, as well as costume and scene design. This exhibit features rare photos of Marilyn Monroe, Coco Chanel and Truman Capote, along with several self portraits.  Don’t miss this amazing opportunity!

‘Paper Airplane’ marks the return of the award-winning Alison Krauss and Union Station.  The sound that Krauss and longtime bandmates create is both hauntingly beautiful and familiar, mixing elegance and heartbreak.  The bluegrass roots are apparent, but in a way that brings the traditional sound into present day.  “Every silver lining always seems to have a cloud that comes my way,” Krauss sings in the opening track.  Her voice is the voice of an angel, managing to convey heartache in just a few notes.  That, combined with the skilled musicians of Union Station, make this one of the best albums of the year.

Be sure to catch the first exhibition of Degas’s dancers in Washington DC in 25 years.  Degas was a passionate devotee of ballet, pursuing the subject for over 40 years through oils, pastels, drawing, prints and sculpture.  He created over 1500 works devoted to the anatomy, posture and movement of dancers.  This exhibit features almost 30 works of arts from some of the world’s greatest collections, including the Phillips permanent collection.
