This month, 17th and 20th Century art masterpieces converge, with simultaneous exhibits a mere 100 miles apart, in New York City and Philadelphia, some of which have not been seen in the United States in decades.

PMD is excited to be working with two world-renowned fine art museums for these shows:  The Frick Collection in New York City, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

The Frick Collection will host a grouping of works from Dutch masters, including the famous “Girl with a Pearl Earring” by Johannes Vermeer. Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Hals: Masterpieces of Dutch Painting from the Mauritshuis will open on October 22nd and run through January 19th at The Frick on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

This special collection has traveled all the way from the Mauritshuis art museum in The Hague, Netherlands, which has not lent this large a body of work from its holdings in almost thirty years. Representing a range of subject matter and techniques used in the 17th century, these 15 paintings represent the crown jewels of the Mauritshuis collection.

Opening October 14th and running until January 5th, the Philadelphia Museum of Art will host the first exhibit to focus on French painter Fernand Léger’s The City. Titled Léger: Modern Art and the Metropolis, the exhibit will focus on the experimental fine arts decade of the 1920’s and Léger’s influential role in combining painting and the growing focus on the urban environment and mass media.

The exhibit will present Léger’s paintings on the city, as well as projections, theater designs, and print advertising by the artist, and his contemporaries. More than 120 works will be on display, with various artists depictions of the rapidly growing and complex urban landscape, from almost 100 years ago.
